What are Common Warts?

Common warts are unhealthy/unnatural local growths of skin or mucous membrane infection caused by a virus known as Human PapillomaVirus (HPV). The infected part of the skin becomes dead and tough (just like blister); forming clusters of small painless lumps.

Few spread infection on the outer surface of the skin, this infection is also known as common skin warts. Some strains of HPV are known for their role played in increasing cancer risk in human beings.

What are the common causes of HPV infections?
Most of the HPV infections are non-contagious and only infects a healthy human when he/she comes in contact with anything that has HPV on its surface (such as used towel, handkerchief, sleeper or shoe etc.) or touches infected area of the skin of person who is carrying the virus.

As already mentioned above, there are more than a hundred types of warts recognized out of which the following types of warts are common:
1) Common Warts (skin infection, common on hands, knees and leg skin)
2) Mosaic Warts
3) Flat Warts
4) Foot Warts
5) Genital Warts (one of the most commonly known sexually transmitted diseases)
6) Plantar Warts
7) Digitate Warts (also known as filiform warts) etc.

How common warts are treated?
From ancient times, the common warts are treated in many ways. Prior to discovery of modern medicine and medical techniques, common warts were treated by home-made remedies. Home made remedies for warts treatment use acidic nature of its ingredients to get rid of the warts.

Now a day many medicines and lotions are used in warts treatments that contain salicylic acid (salicylic acid is known for its ability to dissolve protein (keratin) that is one of the main building blocks of HPVs and skin warts).

Keratolysis: As mentioned above, use of acids/chemical compounds that are known for their property of dissolving keratin which is a main building block of HPVs and the warts, is one of the commonly used techniques to treat common warts.
Laser Treatment: With advent of new techniques and use of laser in removal of benign tumors and tissue level surgeries, laser surgery also has become one of the several options for the treatment of warts.
Surgery: Removal of the warts using surgery can also be used as one of the options.
Cryosurgery: In this type of treatment, the warts are frozen using agent such as liquid nitrogen after which the warts and area on which the agent is applied becomes dead and falls off.
Herbal Treatment: Few herbal medicines are considered to work effectively on the warts. Based on the state and condition your warts are in, your doctor may suggest you to take help of herbal medicine treatment.

Along with the above mentioned treatments, your doctor may also prefer certain other techniques in order to treat warts.

Complications involved with common warts:
As mentioned already, warts are considered to play key role in spread and development of some types of cancers in humans. If warts are left untreated, they can lead to cancer. Some of the HPV strains which cause common skin warts and genital warts are considered to lead to head, neck, skin and genital/cervical cancers and hence are considered to be High Risk strains of HPV. Similarly, few strains of HPV lead to development of benign lumps and lesions.

Prevention:
As mentioned above, warts are not contagious and do not spread through air or respiration. However, they spread only when a healthy person touches infected skin or warts of a person suffering from warts. You may also develop warts if you touch anything that has HPVs on its surface. Maintain hygiene and do not touch wounds/warts of a person who’s infected with HPV and also objects used by an infected person such as towel, handkerchief etc.
